How to get a better night’s sleep

According to statistics, up to 16 million adults in the UK suffer from sleepless nights. Almost a third say that they suffer from insomnia. Furthermore, almost a quarter of adults say they get less than five hours’ sleep a night. And, almost half say they don’t get enough sleep as they should. In a survey, Manchester ranked 8th in terms of the number of people likely to suffer insomnia.

A Comfortable Bedroom

Ensure that your bedroom is equipped to entice you to sleep! Maintain a temperature of between 18 and 24 degrees centigrade, make sure you have a comfortable mattress, or mattress topper and, with a sturdy set of curtains, block out all external light.

A Regular Bedtime

A better sleep is achieved through a good routine. By going to bed at the same time, you will help your internal body clock establish a routine. In turn, this will help you get to sleep better. Health practitioners advise that most adults need between 6 and 9 hours of sleep. If you work out when you need to wake up, you can set your bedtime accordingly.

A Relaxation Routine

Firstly, avoid vigorous exercise before going to sleep, as this will disrupt your sleeping pattern. Conversely, through thousands of years of evolution, sex makes us sleepy. Secondly, prepare yourself for sleep by adopting a relaxation routine leading up to your bedtime. This could include:

  • Relaxation exercises such as gentle yoga stretches
  • A warm bath
  • Relaxation audios, such as audio books, entrancing music or natural sound effects
  • Avoiding the use of electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets
